UN chief urges Myanmar military to stop repression
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged on Monday Myanmar’s military to stop repression against citizens and release detained people.
“We see the undermining of democracy, the use of brutal force, arbitrary arrests, repression in all its manifestations. Restrictions of civic space. Attacks on civil society. Serious violations against minorities with no accountability, including what has rightly been called ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya population. The list goes on,” Guterres said speaking to the UN Human Rights Council.
Several western countries, including the United States and Germany, have already announced plans to introduce sanctions against the Myanmar military, which recently conducted a coup and seized control over the country.
