United Airlines to cut jobs despite relief bill
United Airlines Inc. announced on Friday that it expects to reduce the workforce regardless of the economic relief bill which is set to become law at 4 pm ET when United States President Donald Trump is scheduled to sign it.
“United will not conduct involuntary furloughs or pay cuts in the US before September 30,” airline’s CEO Oscar Munoz and President Scott Kirby emphasized in a letter to employees. Both of the company’s leaders estimated that the damage coronavirus pandemic inflicted on global airlines is larger than the economic hit suffered after September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US.
“We expect demand to remain suppressed … possibly into next year,” they said, adding: “If the recovery is as slow as we fear, it means our airline and our workforce will have to be smaller than it is today.”
