US buys ‘almost entire’ remdesivir world supply – expert
Dr. Andrew Hill, a senior visiting research fellow at Liverpool University, told Sky News on Wednesday the United States has purchased “almost entire” world supply of remdesivir, a drug that has been used to treat Ebola and examined as a possible cure for COVID-19.
“So far, we know that for the next three months there will be no supplies of remdesivir – America will take the drugs and we won’t have access to them,” Dr. Hill said and called for “equality between countries,” warning the same might happen when a vaccine is produced.
American pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences recently announced it plans to start the phase 1 study on remdesivir in August. The firm previously said it would make the drug available to 127 countries across the world for the treatment of coronavirus.
