US, China hold ‘constructive’ first trade talk
United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai (pictured) and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He had on Thursday their first phone call since US President Joe Biden took power in January. According to China’s Ministry of Commerce, the two sides conducted “candid, pragmatic and constructive exchanges in an attitude of equality and mutual respect.”
“Both sides believe that the development of bilateral trade is very important, and exchanged views on each other’s issues of concern and agreed to continue to maintain communication,” the ministry added. The US side said Tai “discussed the guiding principles of the Biden-Harris Administration’s worker-centered trade policy and her ongoing review of the US-China trade relationship, while also raising issues of concern.” Neither party reported on any progress in the current tense relationship between Washington and Beijing.
