US delaying UK trade deal over N. Ireland concerns – report
Washington is concerned with United Kingdom’s threats to invoke Article 16 in the Northern Ireland Protocol from the post-Brexit trade deal and has thus decided to suspend its tariff talks with London, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing “communication” it has allegedly had access to.
An official from the United States Commerce Department reportedly revealed that the discussions about tariffs on steel and aluminum with the UK can’t continue due to Washington’s fears that Downing Street may endanger peace on the island of Ireland if it goes through with its threats.
United States President Joe Biden agrees that the Northern Ireland Protocol “should be implemented,” according to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who spoke to the American commander in chief last month.
