US House passes bill allowing citizenship for Dreamers
The United States House of Representatives approved a bill opening a part to citizenship for Dreamers, people brought illegally into the country as children. Representatives voted largely along party lines with a 228-197 majority. However, the bill’s passage in the Senate is not certain, considering the slim majority Democrats have in the chamber.
In addition to Dreamers, the bill will allow those with a Temporary Protected Status to apply for citizenship. Last week, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas designated Venezuela for temporary protected status for 18 months, allowing some 300,000 Venezuelan nationals to legally stay in the US.
