US initial jobless claims up 16,000 to 351,000
The number of initial jobless claims in the United States for the week ending September 17 increased by 16,000 compared to the previous week’s revised level to 351,000, according to a report published by the US Labor Department on Thursday.
The figure marked an unexpected increase for two weeks in a row, as analysts predicted the numbers would go down. The previous week’s level was revised upwards by 3,000 and now stands at 335,000. The 4-week moving average stood at 335,750, decreasing 750 from the previous week’s revised average.
For the week ending September 11, the advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate gained 0.1 percentage points from the previous week’s revised rate to climb to 2.1%. Insured unemployment in the same week also saw its numbers go rise 131,000 from the previous week’s revised level to 2,845,000.
