US job openings up to 7.4 million in February
Job openings in the United States increased in February compared to the prior month and amounted to 7.4 million, exceeding analysts’ expectations, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed on Tuesday. The job opening rate climbed to 4.5%.
According to the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), the number of hires in February grew by 273,000, compared to the previous period, to a total of 5.7 million. Hires increased in the accommodations and food services industry, but dropped in the education sector.
Total separations, which include quits, layoffs and discharges, remained at 5.5 million with the separations rate being 3.8%. The quits rate also stayed unchanged at 2.3%, while the layoffs and discharges rate stood at 1.2%, compared to the previous month.
