US mulls placing tariffs on Canadian aluminum again – report
United States administration officials are discussing the possibility of reintroducing import duties on Canada-made aluminum, the New York Times reported on Tuesday citing sources with knowledge of the negotiations.
The representatives have proposed a plan to their colleagues in Ottawa that would be aimed at resolving the issue of a jump in aluminum imports from Canada, and have provided them with a July 1 deadline for a reply, according to the newspaper.
Aluminum trade was a major sticking point in United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) negotiations last year, and the trade deal had been struck after Washington decided to exclude Canada and Mexico from levies on aluminum imports.
Shortly after the report came out, another story published by Reuters suggested the US Chamber of Commerce is opposing the Trump administration’s plans of reimposing tariffs on Canadian aluminum.
