US senators raise concern with Tesla AV technology
US Democratic Senators Edward Markey and Richard Blumenthal expressed significant concerns regarding Tesla’s Autopilot system, saying that they were “deeply troubled” by the company’s design choices. Having reviewed many reports on breaking flaws in Tesla’s Autopilot and Full-Self driving technologies, Markey and Blumenthal decided to issue an official statement.
“Although automated driving and driver assistance systems have the potential to enhance safety, they must be implemented with strong safeguards that will ensure our cars follow the rules of the road and drivers are fully engaged,” the senators said.
In fact, Senators Markey and Blumenthal have been warning about the safety issues entailed by autonomous vehicle (AV) technology for years, querying big car makers on the safety protocols of their products. After a series of 2021 accidents involving Tesla AV systems, the senators called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to conduct an investigation and take appropriate action.
