US studying economic penalties on China – Hassett
White House economic advisor Kevin Hassett said on Friday that the United States is “studying economic penalties” on China in response to its proposed Hong Kong national security law.
“We’re absolutely not going to give China a pass…it’s a very difficult, scary move,” Hassett told CNN and stressed that all options are on the table.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo urged Beijing to reconsider the “disastrous” law on Hong Kong which endangers the autonomous region’s autonomy. The proposed Chinese legislation comes in response to Hong Kong protests and bans foreign interference, secession and any acitivities that may call for rebellion against the government.
