US tells citizens to ‘reconsider’ travel to HK, China
The United States Department of State updated its travel advisory for China and Hong Kong on Monday, asking citizens to “reconsider” visiting the country and its special administrative region over coronavirus concerns and “arbitrary enforcement of local laws.” The advisory replaces a “do not travel” advisory due to the improved COVID-19 situation.
Still, the State Department claimed that the Chinese government “uses arbitrary detention and exit bans” and warned American citizens could “be detained without access to US consular services or information about their alleged crime.” Furthermore, Washington noted Americans may be detained for sending private messages criticizing the Chinese government.
Earlier today, Washington banned imports of cotton, hair products, computer components and some textiles from the Chinese region of Xinjiang over alleged forced labor issues.
