US to send official delegation to Taiwan – WH
United States President Joe Biden will send a delegation of a former Senator and two former senior State Department officials to Taiwan as a sign of America’s commitment to Taiwan and its democracy, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced during a briefing on Tuesday.
Earlier, former State Secretary Mike Pompeo, a strong supporter of the island, said it would be “wonderful” to visit the area. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s deputy foreign minister Tien Chung confirmed the US official’s visit and added that they’re “working hard on this”.
The announcement comes shortly after Beijing sent 25 warplanes into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone on Monday, China’s biggest incursion into Taiwanese airspace, according to defense ministry. Analysts suggest that attacks served as a message to Washington that China will not stand back.
