US trade deficit up 1.8% to $80.7B in December
The United States trade deficit in goods and services increased 1.8% in December from the previous month’s revised figure and came to $80.7 billion, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. The rise in the deficit reflected an increase in the goods deficit of $3.2 billion to $101.4 billion and an increase in the services surplus of $1.8 billion to $20.7 billion.
Exports amounted to $228.1 billion in December, up 1.5% on a monthly basis, while imports grew 1.6% to $308.9 billion. For the full-year 2021, the goods and services deficit increased by $182.4 billion from 2020, or 27%. Exports were up by $394.1 billion or 18.5%, while Imports increased by $576.5 billion or 20.5%.
