US troops to withdraw from Afghanistan by Sep 11 – report
United States President Joe Biden is expected to pull all American troops from Afghanistan by September 11 of this year, the Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
Citing a source familiar with the matter, the plan is for there to be no US military in the region by the 20th anniversary of 9/11, adding that the Biden administration is still willing to support the Afghan government through humanitarian aid and assistance with the peace process. Additionally, troops from countries that are part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) are expected to also coordinate their withdrawal efforts with the US, considering that they rely on US logistical support.
Biden has previously talked about his wish to remove US military presence from Afghanistan, but he was sceptical of the May 1 deadline that the Trump administration negotiated. A formal announcement of the plan is expected to come tomorrow.
