Villarreal wins UEFA Europa League
Villarreal CF won the Europa League after the final game against Manchester United went to extra time, and then to a penalty shootout. The first 90 minutes ended with a 1-1 draw, with Moreno scoring for Villareal in the 29th minute, followed by Cavani’s equalizer in the 55th.
The match was marked by very few goal attempts, with only two shots on target for United and one for Villareal. After the regular time draw, the game moved to extra time, but neither team managed to make use of the two periods. Penalties ensued, and after the first series of five did not produce a winner, the teams proceeded to sudden death. Villareal came out as winners after Rulli managed to save his net from United’s goalkeeper De Gea, finishing the shootout at 11-10. This is the Spanish team’s first Europa League trophy, and the first major trophy overall, while this is their manager Unai Emery’s fourth Europa League win.
