Walensky: NYC July 1 reopening ‘reasonable target’
United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky stated on Friday that the beginning of July is a “reasonable target” when commenting on the plans to fully reopen New York City.
Speaking at a press briefing, Walensky stated that individual states should remain “focused on getting everyone vaccinated,” and that as “more people get the vaccine the lower the number of active cases will be”, as evidenced by New York where the weekly average now stands at just over 4,000 positive cases. She also added that in general, she was “encouraged” by the efforts of individual states in containing the virus and their efforts to get the vaccine out to people.
However, Walensky was unwilling to go into further details as to how measures might look like in two months, commenting that the coronavirus “has tricked us before,” and that the CDC will continue to update its guidelines as more information rolls in.
