WH: Biden told Putin to take action against hackers
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters during a briefing on Friday that the United States President Joe Biden had a phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, during which they spoke about the ongoing ransomware attacks by criminals based in Russia and the need for Moscow to take action to disrupt those ransomware groups.
During the hour-long conversation, Biden stressed that it is necessary for the Russian government to take action against the hackers even if the cyberattacks were not directed by Kremlin. The US investigation into ransomware attacks is still ongoing and has not established a link between the criminals and the Russian government.
“President Biden reiterated that the United States will take any necessary action to defend its people and its critical infrastructure in the face of this continuing challenge,” the White House official readout said.
