WHO: South America is new COVID-19 epicenter
South America is now the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Director Dr. Mike Ryan said at the agency’s daily press conference on Friday.
Dr. Ryan noted that Brazil is currently the most affected by the outbreak, and went on to comment on the use of hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 in the country by saying: “The current guidance for hydroxychloroquine does not support widespread use for COVID-19 until trials are complete.”
Brazil approved the use of hydroxychloroquine, a drug repeatedly praised by United States President Donald Trump, as it became the thrid-worst hit country by the pandemic as its number of registered cases stands only behind the totals of the US and Russia. Brazil has over 312,000 recorded cases of the disease, including 20,112 deaths. Other South American countries heavily hit by the pandemic include Peru with over 108,000 cases and Chile with more than 61,000 registered COVID-19 cases.
